Always wanted to find treasures underwater? Here is one great solution an Underwater drone or ROV remotely operated vehicle.
You probably know Airborne drones and pretty much the same is available for underwater.
However there are a few more technical difficulties for underwater drones. Water pressure, light, currents and so on.
ROV or ROUV
Technically it should be called ROUV remotely operated underwater vehicle but commonly just called ROV) it is an unmanned underwater vehicle.
First things first, you can operate the ROV from the outside and don’t have to get wet or in the water. The outside can be a vessel, ship, dinghy or just from land.
Tether Cable
Due to water density a normal remote control wouldn’t work underwater, the connection would break off just below the water surface. So the ROV is tethered which is a cable connected with the ROV and running up to the mother-ship from there it is usually connected via Bluetooth, WiFi or a physical cable connection with the remote controller.
Most Tether cables are built tough so they can be pulled on with a tension of around 50kg.

Attachments
Sophisticated attachments are available for purchase such as a robotic arm, a claw, scissors, clippers, drills or a soil sampler obviously depending on what model you own or want to purchase.
Battery
Some drones come with an exchangeable Battery pack so you don’t have to wait until the drone is charged to do your next mission you can then just bring the underwater drone back swap it out put your spare Battery pack in and off you go again.
Battery sizes are mostly kept below a 100Wh due to airplane regulation and the aviation flight control.
Camera
The latest models have up to a 4k UHD Camera with a wideangle lens commonly you can also film in slow motion and many come with Image stabilization.
You can also take pictures with the same Camera mostly around 12MP.
Lights
You can have integrated LED Lights or sometimes you can attach external lights lights to your underwater drone.
Depth rating
Underwater drones are mostly rated to a depth of 330 ft (100m) but some also can go up to 660 ft (200m) and out to a maximum horizontal radius of 660 ft (200m)
Speed
Most of the Underwater drones reach speeds of around 3 Knots.
Maneuverability
Most underwater drones are equipped with 4-8 thrusters (vertical + horizontal and sometimes on a 45° Angle) which are as well replaceable propellers due to wear and tear. The latest versions are fully maneuverable in any way; Lateral, Arc Rotation, 90° up/down, 360° pitch/yaw/roll.
Depth holding
Your Underwater drone should be equipped with a depth sensor to perform smart hovering at targeted depth and direction or to do targeted close-up or posture positioning.
Weight
Weight of an underwater drone starts at around 4.0KG (8.8 lbs) and can go up to around 10Kg (22lbs) with all attachments.

Testing an underwater drone
Most underwater drones ROVs are tested in swimming pools and lakes where the water is calm, however some have tested their own personal ROVs in the sea. Doing so, however, creates difficulties due to waves and currents that can cause the ROV to stray off course or struggle to push through the surf if the waves are too big and the current to strong and due to the small size of ROV propellers.
